Desire to Serve

Being a 17 year old female, people tend to look at you weird when you’re talking about travelling to a third world country to “help out.” Teenagers these days don’t usually have a passion to help those who are less fortunate. My desire has always been to volunteer on a missions trip, and this past summer, I had the opportunity to do so in the beautiful country of Honduras. The poverty level is unbelievable..to see people so poor, yet so grateful for all that they have. We take so many things for granted here in America, me especially. Hot showers, an abundance of food, clothes, shoes, even our own families. Yes, there are those who have had the unfortunate luck of being abandon or whatever their circumstance may be, and have had to spend time in foster care, but eventually, they’ll find someone to love and care for them. Children in Honduras and many other countries aren’t that lucky. They are lucky to have even one person to show them the least bit of love and compassion towards them. Hot showers are unheard of and people are lucky to have even one meal a day. They work for what they have day after day, continuously. The time I spent over there was truly amazing. Living in their conditions and assimilating to their culture was most definitely a culture shock. I’m truly thankful for all that I learned and I’ve learned to never take anything for granted. I’m blessed to live in a country that has the freedom and rights that we do. Words cannot begin to explain the love I have for my country, my family, and most of all, my God.
